West End Girls

West End Girls is off my list of karaoke songs. I had been meaning to sing that one for a while. It had been too long since my last karaoke excursion.

Nothing Interesting Happened Today

… and I should get to bed. I’ve been staring at this screen for twenty minutes, trying to come up with something fun, but I failed to come up with a long form thought worthy of blogging.

What I considered:
– I started reading a book that I felt was a bit dry and British to get me really reading, so I thought I should start reading another one just to mix it up. Unfortunately, I picked up a book that is written in the second person and uses Scottish slang. I need to find something more American next, methinks.
– Boardgame review/thoughts
– I should write a book /end message

Yay?

Posting On My Macbook

…and seeing the Internet mourn Steve Jobs. It’s kind of strange. I don’t recall any other major tech guru of such ilk that passed in my lifetime. It wasn’t like the world didn’t see it coming; he was looking ill and had taken such a step back from the spotlight. Still, it feels unreal. A big slice of culture and worldliness died today.

I feel a lack of words. I’m somehow remembering watching Pirates of Silicon Valley, which was a TV movie I watched back in high school starring Anthony Michael Hall as Bill Gates and Noah Wyle as Steve Jobs. Now that’s a strange memory.

The Time Between Now and the Future

I’ve spent most of the day studying for my CPA exam, and it’s really kind of freaking me out. I feel the weight of the test on my head; it is such an epic test with big implications. I’m worried sick about passing the tests. I don’t think I’m going to be very fun for a while.

Between Politics and Studies

Today I was studying for the Regulation section of my CPA exam, and was reading over several governmental acts that regulate business in this country. Of course, the government’s regulations on how a business must conduct itself is a rather testy point of politics these days. Though I have my political opinions, I find talking about such things a one-way street to nowhere. I think that political discourse now, with the media’s omnipresence and the politico way of always campaigning has caused the discourse to be less discussion and more ‘I’m right, and you want the world to burn.’

I always cringed in my accounting classes when the discussion veered toward the political motivation for regulations. I had one teacher who always seemed to be teaching the classes were these sorts of things would come up, but I always thought that she kept her discussions rather neutral. However, somebody in the class would always seem to voice their political opinion on the subject, and I would always cringe. Sometimes the class would then get really waylaid. It’s nice that you have an opinion, but I think that class is not the forum for such things. What you think about it is way less important than what it is when we’re just need to know the particulars of the subject.

Sigh. I kind of hate politics sometimes…

Between This Page and the Next

I have been reading quite a few books lately, which is something that I haven’t done in a while. This is partially because my girlfriend has hundreds of books, and partially because I have become addicted to the hunt of the thrift store bargain (which is probably another post in itself).

I have started a list to keep track of my books on Goodreads, which is quite a helpful tool. I can look up reviews of the books I find in the randomness of the thrift store, I can remember what I said I would read next, and I can keep track of how much I am reading.

However, I find that the problem is that I’m nowhere close to reducing my ‘to read’ list, because I’m constantly adding books. As I look at the fifty or so I have in the list now and think of all the thousands of pages left to read, I think to myself “Well, this is going to take a while.” Still, I think that I will have fun with it.

Ants Between the Cracks

I moved this summer from my rather uncomfortable apartment digs to a very nice house with my girlfriend this summer. One of the things that I have had to get used to is the maintenance needed for the house. I rather enjoy it, but I can see how one might find it an unending task of frustration. However, the sense of accomplishment when I finish a project is quite nice.

One frustration is the ants in the front lawn. Last week we sprayed for the ant hills there in the lawn, and they responded by moving their piles closer to the house. Awesome… So, some more stinky spraying is needed. At least it’s the great outdoors, I suppose.
